55 inmates work toward rehabilitation through treating addiction issues

Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) held its inaugural graduation ceremony for its newly formed Substance Abuse Treatment (SAT) program.
The program is run through HealthRIGHT 360 and uses a cognitive behavioral treatment system developed by the University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute. SCC offers a multi-level program with class lengths of three, five and six months.
The program was offered to inmates meeting the criteria on the Level III Sensitive Needs Yard on Facility C. In addition, new classes have also begun at Baseline Conservation Camp, situated approximately five miles from the institution. These inmates have a minimal amount of time remaining on their sentences and will soon be reentering local communities.
All participants who complete the program will be partnered with a Transitional Counselor to plan an after-incarceration treatment program to continue with their treatment needs. In addition to the life skills and tools the inmates receive as part of the program, they are also eligible to receive Milestone Credits which may reduce the length of their sentence upon completion of the program.
SCC graduated 55 inmates during the ceremony, and of those 55 almost half have reenrolled to continue classes in the program.
One inmate, who spoke during the ceremony, said he was grateful for the chance to be a part of this rehabilitation program.
“This is the best program I have ever had a chance to be a part of,” he said.
During the ceremony Warden Heidi Lackner, Correctional Counselor III Deborah Clark and Marsha Bernstein, from HealthRIGHT 360, addressed the graduates with words of encouragement and praise for their accomplishment.
