Veterans who have landed in the state’s correctional system have organized a support group to help them reintegrate into society.
The California Institution for Women’s (CIW) newly created veterans group (Veterans In Prison) held a ceremony Dec. 6 to establish CIW as Veterans Post #1.
The Veterans Post is the first of its kind within an institutional setting.
Special guests included retired Major General Peter Gravett, U.S. Armed Forces veterans and acting Warden Kimberly Hughes.
During the ceremony, the Veterans In Prison (VIP) Honor Guard posted colors for the first time.
The United States flag posted during this ceremony was flown over the United States Capitol on September 11, 2014, and was provided to CIW by Congressman Henry Waxman specifically for VIP Post #1.
The VIP group will provide incarcerated veterans with resources to assist them with reintegrating back into their communities.
