Substance Abuse Program inmates given opportunity for residential programs
By Eduardo Duran, Substance Abuse Program Counselor
Calipatria State Prison
Inmates in the Substance Abuse Program recently learned about their continuing treatment options post-release in addition to housing and employment.
Forty inmates from Calipatria State prison were given the opportunity to meet with Barry Lindstrom and Ralph Mendoza from Healthright 360 representing the San Diego, Los Angeles and the Bay Areas; Curtis Jones from Community Education Center representing Los Angeles and Long Beach; and Aruna Patel, the Alcohol and Drug Studies Director from Imperial Valley College.
They were informed of the housing, training and job prospects in the represented areas.
Rehabilitation counselors, social workers and parole planning were also present. The inmates were informed of social programs including health care, job training and other social programs.
Parole Agent R. Plascencia was able to give information on where the inmates were paroling and parole requirements and services.
Inmates were receptive and stated that they did not know so many services were available, according to fair organizers.
Several of the inmates expressed interest in the job readiness and resume writing workshops; others were more interested in the parenting and family re-integration workshops or the anger and stress management workshops offered by the providers.
The provider fair was a success for both the inmates and the providers.
Prison officials congratulated all who participated. They also gave credit to Transitional Counselor E. Duran from CEC for organizing the fair.
